I think rest stops were originally built in the late 60's (I read that at one.)
I am so thankful that they are are part of road travel. We made use of many a rest stop along our way. The timing & frequency of our stops was typically dictated by our bladders, but almost as often, by the need of the little people in our car to stretch & play.
